My Quest for a Safe & Effective Deodorant
I've been on a quest to find a safe, effective deodorant that actually works for years. When I was first diagnosed with PCOS back in 2010 and trying to overcome infertility, I started researching everything. I knew I needed to clean up my lifestyle, especially the products I was putting on my skin daily.
Enter natural deodorant. I knew I had to stop using antiperspirants due to the aluminum content. There's mixed opinions and research on the dangers of using aluminum under your arms, but I think it's common sense that rubbing aluminum under your arms every day just can't be a good idea no matter how you look at it. Plus antiperspirants prevent us from sweating, which sounds great in theory that we stay dry and smell fresh, but our bodies are made to sweat to release toxins. It happens for a reason.
So I've tried a ton of different brands, mostly ones purchased from Whole Foods or Amazon. So many brands claim to be natural but are loaded with sketch ingredients so you really have to do some detective work. Below I'm sharing my absolute favorite brand plus two other runners up. Everybody is different and will respond differently to certain deodorants so you may have to experiment with different ones. What works for one may not work as well for another based on activity level, lifestyle, diet, etc. Did you know sticking to a Paleo diet and staying hydrated can decrease body odor? — another reason I love nutrition..the food we eat affects everything.
So my favorite brand is..
Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant- It has held up in hot weather and sweaty workout sessions. Yes I still sweat when I wear it (which is wonderful and natural) but I don't smell even at the end of the day and it doesn't stain my clothes. At $16 for a 1.7 oz roller it's pricey but a little goes a long way, and I think this will last me at least 6 months or more.
They offer several scents including Lemongrass, Charcoal, Lavender, Tea Tree, Geranium, and Unscented. I went with the Charcoal formula because it has less baking soda which can be irritating to sensitive skin. Primally Pure's deodorant contains kanolin clay (a detoxifier) and non-nano zinc oxide which combats odor. Other ingredients are arrowroot powder, tallow from grass fed cows and essential oils of Eucalyptus and Peppermint which give such a fresh scent. All the ingredients are pronounceable!
I love Primally Pure, their products, and their mission (I'm a Beautycounter consultant because I've become very passionate about safer skincare and feel Primally Pure is another great company offering safer products). They use certified organic ingredients from family owned farms whenever possible.
Primal Pit Paste uses non-aluminum baking soda to neutralize odor, organic coconut oil and shea butter, and organic arrowroot powder to keep you dry. Their deodorants are also free of synthetic fragrance and GMOs. They have several great scents to choose form including Jasmine, Lavender, Lemongrass, Coconut Lime and Orange Creamsicle (I love lavender)
They are sold in jars (8.95 for 2 oz), sticks ($10.95 for 2 oz), and sprays ($9.95 for 4.0 oz). And the coolest thing they offer is the different levels of deodorant depending on your body and activity level- Sensitive is baking soda free and for people just switching from conventional deodorant, Level 1 for moderate activity levels and cooler temps, and Level 3 for high activity levels and higher weather temperatures.
Overall this deodorant performs great, doesn't stain and smells great. It's my second favorite because some days I need to reapply mid day. I just love the company and their transparency and dedication to safer ingredients.
Native deodorant is my third favorite. It smells great, is made without parabens, phthalates, talc or aluminum, and doesn't stain my clothes. It sells for $12 for a 2.65 oz roller. They have several scents for women including Lavender & Rose, Coconut & Honey, and Gardenia & Orchid. They even have scents that smell more manly such as Eucalyptus & Mint. I love that they have a men's line because a lot of deodorants I've tried are too floral smelling for my husband.
For the most part, you can pronounce the ingredients and I think it's a safer option that smells great and works for everyday use. It didn't hold up as well when I was outside in the heat or exercising, and I was finding I needed to reapply a few times throughout the day.
So those are my top three! And remember it will take your body time to adjust if you're just switching from conventional antipersperiant to a safer deodorant! If baking soda in these formulas irritates you, try aloe vera under your arms to soothe the irritation and remember to dab your deodorant on instead of rubbing it on.
Right now I'm using the Primally Pure Charcoal deodorant on days I'm going to be in the heat or doing heavy exercise and on the other days I just use Wellness Mama's Homemade Recipe which also works pretty good! Only downside is the time it takes to dry after application so you don't stain your clothes.
What natural deodorants have you used that work? Would love to hear!
