Favorite Protein Bars

I get a lot of questions about what are the best snack bars when you need a quick refuel. While these bars are not foods I'd recommend eating everyday (you want to eat real food not from a package as often as possible), I think they are great options for a busy schedule, while traveling, pre or post workout, or for a treat. So here are my top four bars! And remember, no bar is perfect but these are all cleaner options:) When I look for a "clean" bar these are my requirements:

  • Gluten free
  • Dairy free
  • Soy Free
  • Good carb/protein/fat ratio (meaning enough grams of fat and protein to balance out the carbohydrate in the bar)
  • Prefer organic
  • Delicious

Larabars- I've always loved how short the Larabar's ingredient list is. For example, the Peanut Butter Cookie flavor contains- dates, peanut, sea salt. It's my favorite flavor and has more protein than the other flavors. They may not be organic, but they are non GMO and gluten, dairy and soy free. On my really hectic mornings of getting all the kids out of the house, I've had a Larabar topped with almond butter for added protein.


Square Bars- Square bars are by far my favorite and the most delicious. They offer organic bars that are gluten free, dairy free and soy free and made with low glycemic sweeteners such as coconut nectar. My favorite flavor is chocolate coated coconut and contains 5 g MCTs. They also sell a line of Crisp Protein Bars and Popcorn but I haven't gotten to try those yet!


goMacroBars- These bars are organic, gluten free, vegan, and delicious! They are sweetened with organic coconut sugar and organic brown rice syrup and have protein from organic sprouted brown rice protein and organic pea protein. My favorite flavor is the Protein Pleasure- Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip bar with 11 g of protein.


RxBars- These are another simple bar brand that have no added sugar (sweetened with dates and fruit), dairy free, soy free, and gluten and grain free. These are very chewy so don't enjoy them as much as the above bars, but I like to change it up sometimes. Coffee Chocolate is my favorite with 12 g of protein and 9 ingredients- Egg whites, dates, almonds, cashews, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, sea salt, and natural flavors. I did read a negative article by The Food Babe about these bars containing "natural flavors" and not being organic. While I do think "natural flavors" is suspect and vague and in a perfect world these would be organic, I think they are a good option every now and then when you need fuel and nutrition.
